STADIUM-ARMORY CAMPUS READY FOR SUNTRUST ROCK ‘N’ ROLL USA MARATHON ACTIVITIES THIS WEEK

Grammy-winning band Switchfoot headlines Finish Line Festival on Saturday

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The SunTrust Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon and CareFirst Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Half Marathon weekend begins Thursday and features three days of fun, healthy activities for participants and spectators. Confirming Washington, D.C.’s status as a premier destination for endurance sports, both marathons are now operating under the umbrella of the international Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series directed by the Competitor Group, Inc.
“We welcome the Competitor Group to the nation’s capital and look forward to the unique experience the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series will bring to Washington, D.C. and our local running community,” said Erik A. Moses, managing director of Events DC’s Sports and Entertainment Division. “With live bands performing along the course and at the Finish Line Festival, it will be a fun and festive day for runners, their supporters and anyone looking to have a good time this Saturday.”
Marathon weekend kicks off with the Health & Fitness Expo at the DC Armory Thursday and Friday. The Expo, which is free to the general public, features interactive activities, educational sessions and speakers along with 80 exhibitors providing food, giveaways and health and fitness information. Parking is also free for attendees in Lots 7 and 8.
The Expo is the precursor to the SunTrust Rock ‘n’ Roll USA Marathon and CareFirst Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, which begin Saturday at 8 a.m. near RFK Stadium. Over 21,000 runners will participate in the event, featuring the only marathon course set entirely within the District of Columbia. The race hosts runners from all 50 U.S. states and 34 international countries. The 2012 race is projected to draw a record 40,000 visitors, 1,000 volunteers and 74,000 city-wide spectators.
Expanded this year is the Finish Line Festival, to be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the DC Armory Mall on race day. Headlining the Festival is Grammy-winning Christian alternative band Switchfoot, who will keep the crowd rocking with tunes from their recently released album “Vice Verses.”
Kids get into the action with ING Kids Rock D.C., a non-timed, non-competitive one-mile run for children in grades K-7 held on Friday on RFK Stadium Lot 6/7.
The Stadium-Armory campus, which includes RFK Stadium, the DC Armory and the surrounding Festival Grounds, is easily accessible by Metrorail on the Blue and Orange lines (Stadium-Armory station) and numerous bus lines.
